Tracking and Attribution AuditProfessional Services - Accounting4 Countries, 4 Sites

Tracking Audit: Regional Accounting Firm4 Sites. 4 Countries. 18 Months of Fiction.

Before we start implementing Google Ads and SEO strategy, we run FunkyOS through a tracking and attribution audit. Takes 1-2 days. Here is what we found on the first pass for a regional player operating across 4 markets.

Industry: Professional Services - Accounting
Scope: 4 sites, 4 countries
Audit duration: 1-2 days

What FunkyOS Pulled Out on the First Pass

Existing "tracking setup" built by a third-party dev firm. Any surface-level audit would have shown the container as "configured." It was doing nothing.

0
GTM Container: Empty
0 tags. 0 triggers. 0 variables. Published as an 'Empty Container' version. Every event being reported was firing through hardcoded inline JavaScript in the site theme, completely bypassing GTM.
18
Dead GA4 Key Events
18 dead Key Events across 4 properties. Cluttering reports for years. Nobody had cleaned them up.
18mo
Phantom Ads Conversion
A Primary conversion imported from GA4 18 months ago. Never fired once - the site does not send that event name. Smart Bidding had been optimizing toward a signal that does not exist.

Attribution Match Rate

Ads divided by GA4 match rate, by country. The industry shrugs this off as "fine."

ADS / GA4 MATCH RATE BY COUNTRY
Country A
Highest performing market
69%
Country B
58%
Country C
51%
Country D
Lowest performing market
46%
WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE

The client was losing 30-50% of attribution on every campaign. They were making spend decisions on half the data. An Ads-to-GA4 match rate under 90% is not "just how B2B works." It is a signal that attribution is leaking somewhere between the site, GA4, and Ads. You cannot see it in a report. You only see it when somebody opens the containers.

The Worst Part Is Not the Bug

"The previous agency and the client were both staring at the same dashboards every week, for months. The numbers looked stable. Nobody stopped to verify whether those numbers were actually coming from where they thought."

Reporting on broken tracking is not reporting. It is fiction with numbers attached.

Three Things Worth Pulling From This

1
A tracking audit is not a one-off onboarding task

It is quarterly hygiene. GTM containers, Conversion Actions, Key Events - they all accumulate dead layers over time, and nobody cleans them.

2
An Ads-to-GA4 match rate under 90% is a signal, not a shrug

Attribution is leaking somewhere between the site, GA4, and Ads. You cannot see it in a report. You only see it when somebody opens the containers.

3
Prove the data first. Then build.

If you are building a reporting system on top of data, verify the foundation before you build on it. Not the other way around.

How FunkyOS Keeps the System Honest

FunkyOS always audits before we start the work. Whatever shows up in the monthly report has to stand on a foundation we have verified ourselves.

And it does not stop after day one. FunkyOS reruns the same diagnostic loop every month - flagging new dead events, match rate drift, broken conversion imports the moment they appear. Day one tells us where we are starting from. The monthly loop is what keeps the system honest as the work compounds.

Day 1 Audit
Full diagnostic: GTM containers, GA4 Key Events, Ads Conversion Actions, match rate by country
Monthly Loop
Rerun the same diagnostic - flag new dead events, match rate drift, broken imports the moment they appear
Before Any Spend
No Google Ads or SEO strategy starts until the tracking foundation is verified
Vendor Accountability
We open the containers ourselves. We do not trust reports built on unverified data
P.S.

If someone is reporting Ads conversions to you and nobody has opened the GTM container in the last 3 months - open it.

Fifteen minutes of work. You might find what we found.
